(October 2002) Ringgold Depot, built in 1849, and in continuous use on the Western & Atlantic Railroad until recently. The view is to the northeast. The corner of the building nearest the camera was damaged by Hooker's artillery during the battle of Ringgold Gap in November, 1863 and was later repaired with lighter colored sandstone. The "Great Locomotive Chase" ended just north of Ringgold depot, with Andrews and his raiders capture

(May 2013) Enlarge Andrews had taken on wood and water at a previous stop, but as they approached Ringgold's depot they had to keep moving; only a couple of miles farther along the gradual grade coming out of a long curve the General began to slow to a stop. Andrews gave the order for his men to bail out and save themselves, every-man-for-himself, likely a mistake because they outnumbered Fuller and the crew of Texas and their pick-up posse. Above is the marker where the General came to rest, identical to the one eighty miles to the south at Kennesaw (Big Shanty) where the "chase" began
