(October 2002) Pilings of the original Western & Atlantic railroad bridge over the Etowah River south of Cassville (and Cartersville). During the locomotive chase Andrews erred in not burning this bridge or destroying the small engine he saw on a siding nearby. His pursuers, arriving on a handcar, were able to appropriate the engine and give chase

After following on foot, then commandeered pole-car (which overturned from an unseen missing rail lifted by Andrews' men), switch engine Yonah, and passenger engine William R. Smith, all of which were rendered useless either due to track sabotage or traffic congestion, Fuller and Murphy (Cain had given out), now once again on foot, finally stopped the south-bound freight engine Texas near Adairsville which continued the chase in reverse. Dropping Texas' cars on another siding, they were joined along the way by other pursuers, but were in inferior numbers to the raiders
