(2010) Enlarge Col. Eugene Erwin Portrait: Born in Kentucky in 1830, Col. Andrew Eugene Erwin resided in Missouri when he enlisted as a private in the state militia at the outbreak of the Civil War. Commissioned a lieutenant in the Confederate Army, he fought in Missouri, Arkansas, and Mississippi, earning promotion to colonel and command of the 6th Missouri Infantry. Severely wounded in October 1862 at Corinth, Erwin recovered to lead the regiment at Port Gibson and Champion's Hill, Mississippi, only to be killed in action, June 25, 1863 during the Siege of Vicksburg - a tragic casualty of the Confederate cause his beloved wife Josephine opposed.
