Many miners in nearby Virginia City were from Southern States, as well as other places, and the US Government was keenly aware of the value of the gold and silver to help finance the war effort. Troops were stationed here to thwart any attempt at the riches of the Comstock Lode. During the 1860's the USA and most governments around the world were on a "Gold Standard", so the more gold on hand, the more the government could spend and wars are expensive... You can connect the dots..
