(2009) Enlarge Alabama River view from prison site: Although there were several deaths of Union soldiers during the lifetime of Castle Morgan all of the buried soldiers were supposed to have been moved to a burial site in Georgia after the War was over. In 1985 while trying to uncover the footprint of Castle Morgan in Cahawba a Union soldier's remains and uniform shirt buttons were uncovered in this area on the bank of the Alabama River and at the site of Castle Morgan. Upon discovery the remains and buttons were buried back in the original resting place. This is the only Civil War soldier confirmed at rest in Cahawba to this day |
