View looking along the primary wall of Confederate Fort Harrison. The interpretive markers in the background are at one of three Confederate artillery positions in the fort. The earthwork at right center is a Union traverse, the largest in the fort. It was constructed to protect the defenders in the event of a Confederate attack and shielded them from a daily harassing fire from Confederate guns at Forts Johnson and Gilmer to the north. (July l 7, 2013) Enlarge Overland Campaign Pontoon Model

This photo of the Overland Campaign pontoon bridge model is located at the Fort Harrison unit of the Richmond NPS. The original was used in a sneak attack to throw CSA General Robert E Lee's forces off-balance by striking away from Petersburg. Federal troops crossed on bridge like this over the James River and assaulted Confederate Fort Harrison. The surprise attack was very costly but the Confederates eventually just realigned their entrenchments when the fort was lost
