Enlarge Ironclad Display
These ironclads were a key component of the Red River Campaign so it is
fitting that a display appears in the museum at Alexandria where Joseph
Bailey of the 4th Wisconsin envisioned an idea to create a swing-dam which
would cause the Red River to rise high enough in depth to permit these
vessels to steam downward on the Red River, thus avoiding certain loss.

Behind the almost life-sized display of the turret of an ironclad is a
figure and some photos of life in the riverine navy to illustrate the
hazardous life of a sailor in the Red River Campaign.

Cavalry
Seemingly at every bend in the Red River there was CSA Cavalry. The
incident in this panel relates to Tom Green at Blair's Landing on April
12, 1864. There is a recently posted Louisiana Historical Marker at the
site on Tom Green's death on the Red River. |
