Benjamin Franklin Terry was the first colonel of the 8th Texas Cavalry Regiment CSA. B.F. Terry died early in the war but the regiment remained known as Terry's Texas Rangers. B.F. Terry had a brother, David S. Terry who formed a cavalry regiment from Texas known as D.S. Terry's Cavalry Regiment. This regiment saw service in the Trans-Mississippi Dept of the Confederacy and also served with distinction, but never gained the fame of the cavalry regiment raised by B.F. Terry. The survivors of B.F. Terry's Texas Rangers paid for the monument

The quote at the base "Hood's Texas Brigade Shall Retain Its Original Formation As Long As There Is A Man Left To Wave Its Flag"-President Jefferson Davis CSA relates to the decimation in the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia and a plan to reconfigure units based on actual strength to reflect the true manpower. The quote from Jefferson Davis makes it clear the Texas Brigade was exempt. There are other quotes around the base, as well as statistics
