(1993) Enlarge Annunciation Catholic Church: Built in 1863 and designed by Father Jean Baptiste Mouton. The cornerstone was laid on May 4, 1863 starting a ministry that once covered 12000 square miles from Corinth to Meridian Mississippi. The church was used as a hospital for both Confederate and Union soldiers during the Civil War. It would take over 15 years to complete the building of the church through the Civil War and Reconstruction due to delays from the war and it's effect on the area |

(2004) Enlarge Queen City Hotel was the center of the African-American business district and the only all-black exclusive hotel in Columbus, MS at the prime of it's operation. It was constructed, owned and operated in 1909 by Robert Walker, a former slave. Many prominent members of the black community stayed here throughout the years including Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and James Brown. The hotel was in disrepair in modern times and was severely damaged from a storm that left only the face of the building intact. A restoration project was attempted to bring a cultural center focusing on the history of the black community in Columbus. Due to lack of funding and concerns for public safety the city of Columbus deemed the hotel remains a public safety hazard and the remainder of the building was razed. Where the Queen City Hotel once proudly stood now stands an empty field |
