(7-05) Battle of Williamsburg, VA

The Battle of Williamsburg, Virginia took place on the outskirts of the city in the Spring of 1862. Today there are some trenches, but the battle is overshadowed by the Colonial Era.

In Colonial Williamsburg there are buildings which existed at the time of the 1862 Civil War Battle, as well as many excellent reconstructions of 18th century buildings which would have been long gone by the date of the battle.

Bruton Parish Church existed much as it looks today and is open to the public without a fee. In the yard behind the church Confederate soldiers are buried. There are some marked graves for Florida troops, some unknown, and probably some unmarked. When the photos were taken on July 4, 2005, it appeared that some graves had been vandalized (smashed) recently and areas were chained-off. Union dead are buried at Yorktown National Cemetery
