(March 17, 2013) Marker Detail End of A. J. Smith's Left Approach to the Confederate Lunette on the Baldwin's Ferry Road. Carried to this point July 1. The Confederates used artillery and hand grenades against the advancing sap-roller at head of approach. Fired a light countermine in its front June 28: and burned the sap-roller July 1. A gallery for a mine begun July 2, a little in rear of the head of the approach-which had been filled in with sand bags-but not finished. Work under direction of Lieut. Peter C.
