This is above the scale model of Fort Macon found the the foyer area of the fort's visitor center/museum. The map puts the fort's location in context

(April 2012) Enlarge This is a view of the strategic inlet where Fort Macon is located. The waterway to Beaufort and Morehard City/Carolina City would be protected from this location. In World War II the fort was re-activated by the US Govt due to the German U-boat menace. Fort Macon also provided Union troops with a base from which raids were launched
