The Third Battle of Winchester (also called Opequon) occurred on September 19, 1864. General Phil Sheridan launched a dash to Winchester with 37,000 troops to Early's much smaller force. The culmination of the battle occurred when General Wesley Merrill led his cavalry across Opequan Creek about two miles north of Winchester (near the Stephenson's Depot battlefield of the prior year) and completed a dash for a concentrated confederate force at Fort Collier, just north of town. The attack forced the remainder of Early's forces to retreat south.

Parts of Fort Collier remain today.
