The Harrisburg Cemetery, chartered in 1845, is the oldest and largest cemetery within the city limits. It is located on a bluff overlooking the city and the Susquehanna River. 156 soldiers from the Civil War, including 15 confederates, are buried here. One of the most notable individual interred here is Major General John Geary. Geary served in the Mexican War and the Civil War and served as governor both in Kansas and Pennsylvania.
