These photos were taken on November 22, 2006 on lonely Texas Route #4 some miles outside of Brownsville, Cameron County, Texas. The site of the last battle of the War Between The States: a Confederate victory. (See Marker Text for Battle Details) This battle has often been misnamed "Palmetto", but it is really "PALMITO"

To arrive at the site you'll pass a Border Patrol inspection station. After Jan 7, 2007, you will need a passport as proof of citizenship to return from the site. There is no inspection station on the drive toward the site so be forewarned.

The only visible trace of a battle is the monument. From the battle site it is very easy to see the Rio Grande River and Mexico, as well as South Padre Island. There really are no modern intrusions, but if you were to look very hard in the distance you might see the hotels on South Padre Island. This is truly an unspoiled and undeveloped Civil War Battlefield.

This rustic battlefield and marker can be easily missed so along Texas Route #4 there is a brown marker to tell the driver to expect a historic marker a mile distant plus a marker across the road pointing to the battlefield monument, which is set back from the shoulder of the road. (See Photo)

Sadly the remote monument had been defaced with cement (see photos), but otherwise the place was pristine. There was even a marker on the other side of the road written completely in Spanish to warn visitors the land was a nature park.

Sincerely,
William Bozic
Houston, Texas
