Bleak House, built in 1858 for Robert Armstrong. Headquarters of James Longstreet and Lafayette McLaws during 1863 siege of Knoxville. Sharpshooters were stationed in the house tower. In response Union soldiers fired at the house, bullet holes still remain. On the property is an anchor and chain that the Federals stretched across the Holston River (Tennessee River). The chain was to stop any Confederate attempts of floating down the river and destroying a Federal pontoon bridge
