Joseph enlisted in the Confederate Army on July 1, 1863 at Jackson, Tennessee. His term of enlistment was for three years. Joseph advanced to First Lieutenant in General Nathan Bedford Forrest's command, Company E, Wilson's Regiment, Tennessee Cavalry

Joseph died in battle at Tishomingo Creek on June 10, 1864

His "pistols and effects" were sent home

Sadly, the private cemetery adjacent to the soldier's cemetery has been forgotten except by the man who mows the grass. Many tombstones have toppled and broken
