The Magnolia Flag Photograph:
This is a photograph of the "Magnolia Flag" captured just north of
Booneville May 30, 1862, during the 'Capture of Booneville'. Pvt. James
Kennedy of the Second Iowa Cavalry captured the flag, gave it to Sgt.
Budd, who brought it back to Booneville. The Confederates captured Pvt.
Kennedy and he spent six months in a Confederate prison before being
exchanged. The flag was sent to the capital of Iowa and put on display.
The flag is still in the possession of the State Historical Society of
Iowa. The Magnolia flag was the state flag of Mississippi from 1861 until
1894 when it was replaced by the current state flag |
