Jean Baptiste Girardot built a trading post here around 1733, Lewis and Clark passed by in 1803 and Union General Ulysses S. Grant arrived in 1861. He had ordered that four forts be built to protect and defend the city from possible attack by gunboats on the Mississippi River. Forts A, B, C and D were built, but only Fort D survives today to help tell the story of the Civil War action in the Cape.
