In the winter of 1861-1862 over 300
Confederate Soldiers died of measles, typhoid Fever, Pneumonia and other
diseases here at Camp Alcorn in Hopkinsville, KY. Some of the dead were
taken home by relatives for burial in local family cemeteries. The
cemetery holds the remains of the 293 men that remained. The Confederate soldiers whose identities are known are buried in the Camp Alcorn Cemetery, a separate area in Riverside Cemetery near the river. Each gravestone tells the name of the soldier, his rank, and the military unit he served with. A large sandstone slab with a engraved plate gives a bit of the story. |
