(March 2009) Enlarge War Log 1863: Tree section taken from Chickamauga Battlefield several years after the forces of Confederate Gen. Braxton Bragg (Army of Tennessee) met those of U.S. Maj. Gen. William S. Rosecrans (Army of the Cumberland) at Chickamauga Creek below Chattanooga September 19-20, 1863. Thick forrests were in place along the line limiting visibility. The battle was a Confederate victory but the Federals won at Chattanooga in November opening the way for Sherman's March to the sea. Both armies suffered heavily at Chickamauga. Rosecrans lost 16,170 killed, wounded and missing out of 62,000 engaged while Bragg suffered a total of 18,454 casualties out of approximately 65,000 engaged. This war log for years was on display at the GAR post in Richmond, Indiana. Note Confederate 3" Read Shell lodged in stump (Phillips Collection)
