Under the supervision of Dr. Oliver Bundy, who was an assistant surgeon with the 144th NYVI, a committee was formed to choose a suitable monument to honor the Union soldiers from Deposit. The cost was met by appropriations of $1000 each by the town of Tompkins (Now Deposit) and the town of Sanford. Together with private contributions of $750 sculptor Karl Gerhartdt was commissioned to sculpt the monument. The monument dedicated to Union engineer, General Gouvernor K. Warren (Born in Cold Spring , New York) which stands atop Little Round Top at Gettysburg was also sculpted by Gerhardt. The Union monument was dedicated in Deposit, New York on Tuesday September 27, 1888.
