Union artillery and very heavy infantry fire stopped the Confederate southward advance here during the battle of Fort Stedman. Federals who had been driven down the line of works were jammed so tightly into this fort that most could only load weapons and pass them forward to be fired

From what was then known as the "14 gun battery" Maj. Gen. Ambrose Burnside witnessed the Battle of the Crater unfold. All the buildings of the Taylor family plantation, Spring Garden, had been destroyed by then. Only the foundation of the slave quarters remained, upon which the family built a house after the war
