On April 30 1861 a mass rally held here supported Lincoln's call for 75,000 volunteers. A crowd estimated at over 100,000 people turned out to hear speeches with the highlight being the appearance of Union officer and former commander of Fort Sumter, Maj Robert A. Anderson. Following the surrender of the fort he and his men were allowed to return north arriving in NY harbor on April 19th.
