Battle of New Market, Virginia Page4

The battle on the eastern part of the field requires a visitor to go though a tunnel under Interstate 81.

Here the 62nd Va was positioned along a tree line. Breckinridge ordered his troops to the edge of the Valley Turnpike to repel a Union cavalry charge led by General Julius Stahel.

The Confederates successfully repelled the charge and waited for the next Union infantry charge. The ground over which the Union advanced is hilly and downhill for the Union. The Confederates took advantage of the rough terrain and the disorganization in the Union ranks to repel this charge.
