monument marks the grave of Confederate Brigadier General Richard C. Gatlin.
A native of North Carolina, Gatlin was a major in the U.S. Army at the
outbreak of the war and was one of two officers taken as prisoners of war
when Arkansas troops seized Fort Smith in 1861. He subsequently offered his
services to the South and served in North Carolina. He returned to Arkansas
after the war |
