From this photo taken July 18, 2010, it is possible to see the semi-circle shape of the earthworks. On the other side of the earthworks and out of view in this photo there is a bayou so visitors are strongly advised to use bug spray of the strongest variety and exercise respectful caution for the creatures who make the bayou their home...

The University of Texas at Austin, in the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History's William Ballinger Papers, Box 2A188 has a letter from Col James E. Harrison, 15th Texas Infantry CSA, written "in the camp in the field near Simsport May 22nd 1864" in which a particularly vivid account of the battle is given and at the end of the letter in private a scathing rebuke of Gen. Wharton for his "blunder or botch" of attacking when the enemy was already leaving.
