(March 1994) North
view of the Grand Ecore cliff from the SH-6 bridge. Grand Ecore, which is French for
"big bluff," received its name from an imposing
90-foot cliff
overlooking Red River. In 1826 Dr. Sam Russel built a trading post and
home here. In 1853 a yellow fever epidemic almost completely wiped out
the town. Federal troops occupied Grand Ecore during the Red River
Campaign and by 1900 it had became a ghost town |

Enlarge The drive from the
tourist section of Natchitoches was about 4 miles in a straight line. As
the driver approaches the bridge across the Red River, there is a sign
on the driver's left and Tauzin Island Road which makes a "T"
intersection with LA Route 6 out of Natchitoches. It is a sharp turn
before the bridge so be careful and watch for other drivers |

This is the new visitor center/museum at Grand Ecore. The site is
operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers, so you may notice under the
US flag there is a red US Army Corps of Engineers flag on the flagpole.
The building relates the important Union base where Admiral David Dixon
Porter anchored the US Navy ships during the Red River Campaign and
Union General Nathan P. Banks set-up a base. Both Before occupation and
after evacuation by the Federal forces, Confederates used the position

This display at the US Army Corps of Engineers Visitor Center asks and
answers an important question. Grand Ecore is only 4 miles from
Natchitoches, Louisiana. Grand Ecore is on a high hill with a 90-foot
cliff overlooking a bend in the Red River. See the display with photos
taken over time |
