An 1858 woodcut print from Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper shows the Butterfield Stagecoach beginning its first trek west across the southwestern United States. Passengers in the first coach included John Butterfield, president of the Butterfield Overland Mail Co.; Waterman Ormsby, a correspondent of the New York Herald; Judge John F. Wheeler, his wife and two children, all of Fort Smith, Ark; and T.B. Corbin of Washington, D.C.
