14 Confederate guns under the command of Maj. John Latimer fired on Federal positions on Cemetery and Culp's hills to soften the lines for infantry assaults led by Generals Johnson, Ewell and Early on July 2. Union artillery answered their barrage and Latimer was mortally wounded
