In 1960 Mrs. E. C. Bowers and I searched Champion Hill with a metal
detector. We quit doing that due to not wanting to destroy any of the
historical record in artifacts. Mrs. Bowers is not 88 years old and I am 62.
We looked all day from about 9:00 AM till 4:00 PM and found absolutely
nothing. We got discouraged and began to walk up the road to our car which
was parked in front of the MB Church. I was swinging the metal detector, an
old metrotec, and the first ping yielded a US belt buckle. From

Thank you for maintaining history for the rest of us.I commend you and
your staff for your dedication of preserving what was penned as being
america's worst war. Both sides lost .That is lost family.Ended up in family
fueds because of which side of the line you found yourself on. In some
circumstances,as in WV.some started in gray and ended up in blue. I have
family from both Va. and La. I look forward to seeing updates whenever
possible.

Civil war ancestor William Thomas McVay was in the 59th GA Inf. Co. D. I
recently started researching and visited Gettysburg and photographed where
my ancestor was on the 3rd day of the battle. He would have been near
Cashtown on the first day of the battle. He surrendered at Appomatox and
lived until 1876, where he was shot over a debt owed to him.

Excellent site! However, having been an avid researcher of the First MO
Brigade I find the information at Champion's Hill a bit misleading. Their
counterassault on Federal lines was a total sucess, given that 2
understrength brigades smashed 4 Federal brigades and took 5 total to stop
their assault. Had Loring's Division come to support Bowen's hard charging
Missourians, as they were ordered, by Pemberton, it would have been a very
different outcome. Even Federal General McPherson stated that Lo

My wife and each had two 3gr-grandfathers with the 30th and 31st Alabama
of Lee's brigade at Vxbrg. 5 years ago we made the trip there and were
disapointed that the Champion's Hill battlefield was not accessable. We took
a few pictures, but nothing to compare to your virtual tour. Thank You, Keep

time there. Sincerely Jack Snyder

I can understand the persons being frustrated trying to find Champion
Hill and other things in the Port Gibson area. I hunted a whole Sunday
looking for Champion Hill because my great grandfather received two wounds
there. We moved to Port Gibson in 2002 from Illinois and opened a b&b. If we
have a guest that is a Civil War buff we take them in our van to Grant’s
March because signs are gone and roads are bad.

Your www.CivilWarAlbum.com site is WONDERFUL! Very detailed, and very well

buildings, and farms that were there at time of the battle, along with the
modern photos of how they look now. I never fail to visit Gettysburg while
I'm in Pennsylvania from time to time, visiting friends who live a half hour
from the battlefield. My favorite place to eat in Gettysburg is Dobbins

I think a little history lesson needs to be given here. Pillow took his
men away, as did Forrest. The surrender terms were carried by Major
Nathaniel Francis Cheairs of Spring Hill, Tn. He had the dubious duty of
carrying terms laid by Grant back to Buckner's headquarters. Actual
surrender was performed by him at that point.

I will always remember the lives lost, and saved. I didn't experience
this tragedy. But i did experience September 11, 2001. Lives were also lost
then as well. One man close to my father died on one of the 100th floors. I
know i will never forget that day when i heard about the twin towers, and
the innocent lives lost. But i will grow and prosper from it. All i can say
now is God BLess, and i will continue to pray for every life lost at
anytime. Long Lasts the US

Greatest Civil War site going. I have just started a site on the ten
month siege of Petersburg, Virginia. Much has been written about the Civil
war, but little has been written about Petersburg. It was the lonest siege
of any Southern City such as Atlanta, Ricmond or Vicksburg. More lives were
lost here and more battles fought than any where during the war. I have
music on all my pages, but nothing to compare with the copy that you have of
"Battle Cry of Freedom" is this copyrighted or can anyone

battlefields left to visit. I'm saving Gettysburg for last. I still have all
my photos but it's nice to look at everyone else's photos. Every once in a
while, I still go to the State Capitol and look for the regimental flag of
the 1st Minnesota, a unit that sacrificed itself at Gettysburg. It helps
keep some things in perspective. Keep up the good work!
