Both the town and college were named for Brigadier General William Lee Davidson, a Revolutionary War commander. The land for Davidson College came from Brig. Gen. Davidson's estate, a large portion of which was donated by his son

(8-2007Elm Row
 
Elm Row was built in 1836 as a dormitory for 16 students. It later served as the infirmary, a fraternity and home of the Music Department. It was moved to its current location in 1960 and along with its counterpart Oak was placed on the National Historic Register in 1977.

8-2007Philanthropic Hall
 
Philanthropic Hall was built in 1850, and restored in 1956 through the generosity of Mrs. Clarence Hodson. It was placed on the National Historic Register in 1972. It is named for the Philanthropic Literary Society, formed in 1837. Together with the Eumenean Hall the buildings housed the first student organizations at Davidson College and their respective libraries

Eumenean Hall was built in 1849 and restored in 1956 through the generosity of Mrs. Clarence Hodson. It was placed on the National Historic Register in 1972. It is named for the Eumenean Debating Society, formed in 1837. Together with the Philanthropic Hall the buildings housed the first student organizations at Davidson College
