In a little known
1864 battle in the Winchester area, federal cavalry under General Wiliam
Averell clashed with General Ramseur's Division 3 miles north of
Winchester. Averell's assault hit Gaston Lewis's left flank causing
Ramseur to retreat in confusion to Winchester
Averell captured 4 canon and 300 men and caused General Early to withdraw
his command to Fisher's Hill as a prelude to the Cedar Creek Campaign
The battlefield is marked with only signs. The fields to the right are
where Averell's troops were deployed. The Confederates were on the left,
closer to Winchester |
