Battle of Rutherford's Farm, Virginia

In a little known 1864 battle in the Winchester area, federal cavalry under General Wiliam Averell clashed with General Ramseur's Division 3 miles north of Winchester. Averell's assault hit Gaston Lewis's left flank causing Ramseur to retreat in confusion to Winchester

Averell captured 4 canon and 300 men and caused General Early to withdraw his command to Fisher's Hill as a prelude to the Cedar Creek Campaign

The battlefield is marked with only signs. The fields to the right are where Averell's troops were deployed. The Confederates were on the left, closer to Winchester
