Beckham House, 37 Culpeper St. - This house was the home of the John Grigsby Beckham family. A son, Robert Franklin Beckham was a graduate of West Point class of 1859, and a classmate of Union General Edwin Stoughton. Mosby brought General Stoughton here the morning of March 9, 1863 following his capture in the Fairfax Courthouse Raid. Stoughton was welcomed and entertained when Mosby stopped here to eat before taking Stoughton to Culpepper where he was turned over to another old friend of his, Confederate General Fitzhugh Lee. Robert F. Beckham assumed command of the Stuart Horse Artillery following the death of the Gallant John Pelham at Kelly’s Ford in Culpepper County. He was later transferred and killed during the Battle of Franklin Tennessee
