(2004) This is a mortar atop the northeast bastion which faced the Pensacola Navy Yard. Fort Pickens was one of four forts built to defend Pensacola Bay and Navy Yard. Fort McRee was destroyed in the war and has since washed into the bay. Fort Barrancas and the Advance Redoubt still exist on the mainland and can be toured. Pickens was begun in 1829 and completed in 1834 Dale Cox photo |
